What is Bakuchiol and why you need it in your skincare regime!

So, what is bakuchiol? How does it work? Where does it come from? So many questions… Let us learn about this new skin rejuvenating ingredient!

First of all what is bakuchiol?

Bakuchiol is a plant-based compound sourced from the seeds of the babchi plant. These compounds are called terpenophyl part terpene and part natural phenol and they possess powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Traditional Chinese medicines used the bakuchiol herb to heal or aid in various ailments including kidney issues, bone fractures, hair loss, lower back and knee pain. It is also used for skin ailments from minor rashes right through to extreme pigmentation conditions such as vitigilio.

Bakuchiol vs Retinol

People who suffer from sensitive or sensitised skin should not be reaching for retinol. Retinol is a vitamin A derivative, however, it is a highly-reactive molecule used in a lot of skincare products. Retinol works by accelerating skin renewal and reducing the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines and age spots for firmer, smoother and more evenly-toned skin. While retinoid products improve texture, tone, skin moisture retention, sun damage, pigmentation, and acne, they also have harsh side effects such as burning, scaling, and dermatitis. Plus, retinol has been shown to lose its effectiveness over extended meaning users will need to up the potency and amount the longer they use it. So what does all this mean? So basically, you reach a point where your skin is saturated and it no longer works. So what does that leave you with, except a larger bill with lower results?

How is Bakuchiol better?

While bakuchiol works in the same way, it’s not nearly as harsh. Bakuchiol has been shown to turn over skin cells, making room for newer, fresher, better-appearing cells to come to the top. Not only does bakuchiol regenerate skin but “it also pushes the skin-strengthening protein collagen to the surface for more elastic, youthful-looking skin. On top of that, bakuchiol has been shown to cause very little reaction. A study comparing bakuchiol and retinol — published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science discovered “significant improvement in lines and wrinkles, pigmentation, elasticity, firmness and overall reduction in photo-damage.” On top of that, the study showed that bakuchiol did not have the negative side effects of retinol “such as dryness and irritation.”

Bakuchiol is the perfect ingredient to add to your skincare regime just make sure it is a chemical free product that used certified organic ingredients.
